Class of 2018 Session Update

Who wants to travel?  Who wants to know more about Brevard’s airport? Who wants to have their picture taken on an active runway? (while the tower keeps the runway clear of flights of course!)  All this and more was in store for the Leadership Brevard class of 2018, starting with a warm welcome from Clifford Graham, Director of Operations & Maintenance and an airfield tour including tour guide extraordinaire Rob Himler, Airport Communications Coordinator.

Beth Gitlin, (LB 2013) Principal | BJG Global Consultants and current member of the LEAD Brevard board of directors served as class session chair and welcomed our session guests.

Beth Gitlin, LEAD Brevard Board Member and Kristin Bakke, LEAD Brevard

Greg Donovan, Executive Director, Orlando Melbourne International Airport gave us 10 things we didn’t know about our hometown airport – here’s what several classmates had to say – and the afternoon included a walking tour of the new federal inspection station with Officer Dan Bautista, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
  • I didn’t realize how much land the airport owned and that they leased it out to all the corporations on airport property. I also didn’t realize that the new international terminal at MLB is the most technologically advanced in the world!
  • The synergies between MLB and local corporations that go unnoticed by the general public.

  • Airport tenants- Economic drivers in the community.

  • There’s a dog at the airport?!?! Love the look inside these operations.

  • Didn’t know that 80% of the airport’s revenue comes from tenants, NOT flights.

  • The amount of business inside the airport.

  • The most valuable bit of information is how large the airport is and who their tenants are and what they do.

  • All the business that is here at Melbourne airport.

Ashlee Thomas (LB 2017), Senior Manager for Internal and Executive Communications,

Lynda Weatherman, President & CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC) provided a rapid fire overview of the mission of the EDC and its critical role in the development and sustainability of our community. If you are not familiar with the EDC – CLICK HERE to read more  - The EDC is dedicated to attracting new business and investment and expanding existing industry throughout the Space Coast, influencing change on government laws and regulations affecting economic development, promoting the Space Coast to encourage new investment, supporting efforts of Space Coast military installations, and relaying new programs and procedures to assist manufacturing and high tech companies.

“Project Contender”, a corporate relocation exercise facilitated by Elizabeth Huy (LB 2013), Senior Manager, Business Development EDC showcased just one of the many tasks that are part of the EDC’s work in economic development. Class members shared their impressions:

  • Continued growth in Brevard and effort EDC does every day to make this Space Coast first.

  • Reviewing the EDC activity & how much hard work the EDC does to promote the community.

  • How important the EDC is to the community.

  • Economic development is difficult; communities compete/it's difficult/why we give big companies economic incentives.

  • Lynda Weatherman for governor!

  • In the future, become involved with future economic development in the area.

  • The importance of economic development in the larger community and how strategic planning can change the community.

  • Brought new perspective to all our area is working toward.

  • Great to hear about the efforts made by MLB and the EDC to bring new business to the Space Coast.

Immediately following the session, 2018 class members and Leadership Brevard alumni attended the December So-Social at Hurricane Creek Saloon organized by members of the Leadership Brevard Class of 2018.  It wouldn't be a December So-Social without a most festive sweater contest!
